GDI’s fourth Development Cooperation Forum on “Achieving More Equitable Globalization” was held on Dec. 9, 2005, at The Carter Center. Malian and Mozambican counterparts met in Maputo, Mozambique, in October for a preliminary planning session to identify, discuss, and plan their contributions to the forum’s broad themes of policy autonomy and aid effectiveness. They were joined by their colleagues from GDI’s two other partner countries, Albania and Guyana, on Dec. 7 for a pre-forum workshop, during which they all shared their relevant experiences and further prioritized the issues to be addressed over the following two days. On Dec. 8, GDI’s partner countries presented these issues for initial discussion with a small group of representatives from the international donor and NGO community. The discussion was expanded on Dec. 9 to include high-level representatives from many partner countries. Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel laureate in economics, delivered the keynote address. President Carter presided over the forum on Dec. 9, where he made welcome remarks. President Touré of Mali and President Guebuza of Mozambique made opening remarks, and Nancy Birdsall, president of the Center for Global Development, delivered the forum’s second keynote address.
