Shared Growth in Africa Conference a Success
A major international conference on “Shared Growth in Africa” was held in Accra, Ghana, on July 21 - 22, 2005. The focus of the conference was how to balance sustainable dynamic growth with broad-based growth that is poverty reducing. Researchers from around the world were invited to speak on the issues surrounding this theme. Many of these researchers were Africans, reflecting the conference’s goals of enhancing research capacity in Africa and promoting evidence-based policy-making. Speakers included Ghana’s Minister of Communication, speaking on behalf of the President of Ghana; USAID/Accra Mission Director, Sharon Cromer; World Bank Chief Economist for Africa, John Page; and world-renowned economists Ravi Kanbur and Paul Collier. The conference was jointly supported by ISSER, Cornell University, the World Bank, and DFID. USAID/PASSN support was indirectly provided through its cooperative agreement with Cornell University.
