TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS (TIP): The Europe and Eurasia (E&E) region has been the fastest-growing source region in the world over the past decade, second only to Southeast Asia, with estimates of 175,000 to 500,000 persons trafficked annually. In response, USAID’s Europe and Eurasia Bureau has been working to combat trafficking in persons since 1998. USAID activities focus primarily on preventing trafficking, and protecting and assisting TIP victims.

CONFERENCE: One project that USAID’s Europe and Eurasia Bureau funds on the topic of TIP is called “Programme to Support the Development of Transnational Referral Mechanisms for Trafficked Persons in South-Eastern Europe” and is implemented by The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). This programme seeks to ensure that trafficked persons receive appropriate care and support when moving between countries for return, resettlement or participation in trials, and to empower trafficked persons in restarting a self-determined life. Targeted countries in this program are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. From June 1-4, 2009, over 120 government and NGO representatives from Southeastern Europe and Western European countries gathered in Ohrid, Macedonia for a wrap-up conference to mark the achievements in this project’s efforts in combating trafficking in human beings in the region and beyond.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Before the official start of the conference, USAID’s Social Transition Team within the Europe/Eurasia Bureau sponsored a half-day event geared at USAID TIP point of contacts. These sessions focused on sharing knowledge that the Social Transition team has produced and enabled colleagues representing different Missions to share successes and ideas. Audio screencasts were created by the authors of three current research papers. Workshop participants at the pre-conference listened to them and discussed them with the authors. The screencasts are about 15 minutes each. Links are provided to the full papers as well.
